Module 1 established the professional foundation for everything that follows in the HIC Inspector Academy curriculum. After classifying each observation, the student must draft an objective narrative sentence using the location, observation, significance, recommendation structure taught earlier in the module. This step tests whether the student can translate a raw observation into professional report language without slipping into diagnostic claims, vague hedges, or unprofessional tone.
The exercise typically includes a mix of straightforward and ambiguous observations. For example, a missing GFCI near a kitchen sink is a clear safety classification, while a small area of efflorescence on a foundation wall may require more careful reasoning about whether it is cosmetic, maintenance, or worth flagging for further evaluation. Students should show their reasoning, not just their final classification, since the reasoning process is what the exercise is designed to develop.

Sample Practical Walkthrough

Classification: safety hazard, because scalding discharge could injure someone or damage property. Reasoning: the SOP and common plumbing practice call for TPR discharge lines to terminate within a defined low height above the floor and in a safe, unobstructed direction.
The corresponding narrative might read: At the water heater in the garage, the temperature and pressure relief valve discharge line terminates approximately 12 inches above the floor and is directed toward stored items. This is a safety hazard due to potential scalding and property damage in the event of valve discharge. Recommend correction by a licensed plumber.
This walkthrough demonstrates the complete thought process expected in the practical exercise: observe, classify with stated reasoning, and then translate that reasoning into a properly structured, objective narrative sentence ready for inclusion in a real report.
Final Exam Structure
The Module 1 final exam consists of 50 questions drawn from all fourteen lessons in the module, covering history and regulation, ethics, the Standard of Practice, defect language, documentation, and professional judgment. Questions are presented in a mix of multiple choice, true or false, scenario-based judgment questions, and select-all-that-apply formats, mirroring the question styles used throughout the lesson quizzes.
A minimum score of 80 percent is required to pass the final exam, which reflects the level of mastery expected before progressing to the more technical modules of the course. The exam is timed to encourage focused, honest completion but allows enough time for careful reading of each scenario-based question.
Students who do not pass on the first attempt are permitted to retake the exam. It is strongly recommended that students review the specific lessons corresponding to any missed topics before retaking, rather than simply retaking the exam repeatedly without additional study, since the goal of the exam is genuine mastery, not simply passing on a technicality.
Preparing for the Exam
Effective exam preparation begins with revisiting the checkpoint questions and summary bullets at the end of each of the module's fourteen lessons, since these were designed to highlight the most exam-relevant concepts. Students should also review their own quiz results from each lesson and pay particular attention to any questions answered incorrectly, since those topics are likely to reappear in different form on the final exam.
It is useful to re-read the key terms lists across all fourteen lessons in one sitting, since the final exam draws on precise terminology and students are expected to distinguish between closely related concepts, such as a limitation versus a defect, or a major defect versus a safety hazard. Writing out a one-sentence definition from memory for each key term is an effective self-check.
Finally, students should treat the practical exercise itself as exam preparation, since the reasoning skills it develops (accurately classifying an observation and writing a properly structured narrative) are directly tested throughout the final exam's scenario-based questions.
